The Knowing-Doing Gap

You finished Dive Into a Coach Approach® 1.0. You earned your certificate. You showed up, you learned, and you walked away with a framework that made sense.

But here's the question that keeps surfacing:

When a complex patient walks in—the one who nods at every instruction but never follows through—do you still hesitate?

When a conflict arises with a colleague, do you reach for the theory... or do the right words come naturally?

When someone asks you to coach them, do you feel like a practitioner... or someone still checking their notes?

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not broken. You're not behind. You're exactly where every serious professional lands after completing Level 1.

You're stuck in the most exhausting stage of learning:
Conscious Competence.

Why Level 1 Wasn't Designed to Be Enough

Research on skill acquisition shows that mastery happens in four stages:

1

Unconscious Incompetence

You don't know what you don't know

✓ Passed
2

Conscious Incompetence

You're aware of the gap

✓ Passed
3

Conscious Competence

You can do it, but it takes effort

← You Are Here
4

Unconscious Competence

It flows automatically

The Goal →

Level 1 was designed to move you from Stage 2 to Stage 3. It gave you the map. The framework. The language. The awareness.

But here's the problem with Stage 3: Conscious Competence is cognitively expensive. Your working memory is overloaded. You're checking mechanics while trying to connect. You're thinking about what to do next instead of being present with the person in front of you.

The solution isn't more theory. It's deliberate practice under guidance until the skills move from your head to your hands.

Level 1 Gave You the Tools.
Level 2 Teaches You How to Build the House.

Dive Into a Coach Approach® 2.0 is not more of the same. Where Level 1 focused on knowledge, Level 2 focuses on application.

The Question That Determines Everything

There are two types of professionals who complete Level 1:

The First Type

Completes the course and returns to practice the same way they did before. The certificate goes on the wall. The workbook goes on the shelf. Over time, the gap between what they know and what they do grows wider.

The Second Type

Recognizes that knowing is not enough. They understand that the investment in Level 1 was the beginning, not the end. They continue practicing until coaching is not something they do, but something they are.

Where does your path lead?

Still Deciding? Consider This.

The cost of staying in Conscious Competence isn't just cognitive fatigue.

  • It's the patient who didn't get better because the conversation didn't land.
  • It's the conflict that escalated because the right words didn't come naturally.
  • It's the leadership opportunity that went to someone who projected more confidence—even if they didn't know more than you.

Mastery doesn't make you a different person. It makes you more of who you already are—with less friction.

The Next Step Is Yours

You've already demonstrated what matters most: the willingness to grow. Level 1 was the beginning. Level 2 is where transformation happens.
